ABOUT OUR MIDDLE SCHOOL COURSE

In the middle school years students begin to find and exercise their independence. We help students understand the power of influence, and the need to think before acting.

In addition, the pre-teen years are years when students are very susceptible to the influence of others.  One of our primary goals is to help students understand where, how and who influence them.

We also want students to understand the qualities they will need to develop in order to be successful in the workplace and life. Qualities like determination, flexibility and persistence.
In addition, we want students to become aware of what’s required to take their education into their own hands.  We show them the power of consciously directing their current steps in order to reach the future they want for themselves and their families.
Below are two lesson videos from the Navigating Life unit.
Below are two lesson videos from the Influencer Types unit.

“Research on SEL implementation suggests that the most effective strategies include four elements represented by the acronym SAFE: (1) Sequenced—connected and coordinated activities to foster skills development; (2) Active—active forms of learning to help students master new skills; (3) Focused—containing a component that emphasizes developing social and emotional skills; and (4) Explicit—targeting specific social and emotional skills (Durlak et al., 2010, 2011).”  – Secondary CASEL Guide

MindSage 6th GRADE also includes:

Power of Possible – Introduces students to the ‘possible’ mindset, which is a foundation to life long learning.

Influencer Types – Helps students to understand the positive and negative influence others can have on them and their attitudes, as well as the positive or negative influence they can have on others.

Self-Esteem – Rather than focusing on results, or the strengths of others, this lesson encourages students to focus on their own progress and being the best they can personally be.

Breaking Chains – This unit helps students understand that the past does not dictate the future. If a student has struggled or had difficulty in school before, the future may hold a completely different outcome when it comes to learning.

Achieve Success Loop – In this unit, students are helped to see the big picture beyond quizzes, tests and quarter or semester grades. Students are encouraged to focus on their overall growth as life long learner.

MindSage 7th GRADE also includes:

Non-Academic Skills – Students are encouraged to look at what skills they have or need to develop in order to become a responsible adult. The unit helps students understand that skills and qualities that can help them succeed now are also skills that will set them apart from others in the eyes of future employees.

Self Directed Learning – This unit reminds students of their natural curiosity and desire to learn. By tapping into the inquisitive nature of their early childhood, students can strengthen their natural desire to learn.

Grit and Determination – Student are reminded of their in-born tenacity and natural determination. By reminding students that they needed very little encouragement from others to learn how to walk or talk, students can learn how to continue to develop their natural ‘grit’.

MindSage 8th GRADE also includes:

Terrific Transformations – As student begin to change emotionally and physically, they need to understand what is occurring so they can harness the power of change to develop skills that employers find lacking in today’s college graduates.

Mastering the Game of Life – Using principles of chess, this lesson helps students understand how to make decisions in life that will improve their chances of success now in school, at work and in life.

Emotional Intelligence – Students are taught why understanding why and what their feeling, will help them make better decisions and react or respond in an appropriate and positive manner. Students also learn the power of being able to understand non-verbal cues and emotions, as they develop emotional intelligence.
